How to Stuff up Christmas has all the ingredients for the perfect Christmas book. It’s funny and light-hearted and is perfect for getting you in the festive mood. The level of humour in this book is brilliant and there is a laugh on every page. From the word go, I was giggling quietly, and sometimes not so quietly to myself.

Throughout the book, we see the same events from the point of views of both Eve and Greg. I liked this and I think it is a nice touch. Although when I put it down for a few hours and picked it up again a few hours later, I had a sense of déjà vu, when I picked up on an event from the second point of view. Every single character in this book were likeable and Eve’s mother never failed but to make me laugh out loud.

How to Stuff Up Christmas is a witty and heart-warming story. Funny from the very first sentence. This is guaranteed to make you laugh out loud and will definitely get you in the mood for Christmas. After reading How To Get A (Love) Life, I expected great things from this novel and I was not disappointed.

Holy Island by LJ Ross

I would like to thank the author for a review copy of this book in return for an honest review. 

DCI Ryan has been on mandatory leave from his job for three months, but when the body of a girls is found on a remote island, he is finds himself back on job leading the murder investigation. Dr. Anna Taylor, who left the island eight years ago, is called home to help in the investigation, but when her sister also turns up murdered on the same day, the police start to wonder if they have a serial killer on their hands. 

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. I am fairly new to crime fiction, but this book is so well written, that I sound it hard to put down, until I had finished it. I was also shocked to find out that this is LJ Ross' first novel. It is just as good, if not better than some crime fiction I have read by very well known authors. The story is well written and very gripping. It's fast paced and has lots of little twists and turns thrown in that will really keep you guessing. It has a certain air of mystery to it, that keeps you interested and entertained throughout. 

The characters in this novel are some of the best written I have come across. DCI Ryan is a great character and is very likeable from the word go. The more I read, the more I liked him. I loved how I was kept guessing about his past. Anna, is also a very likeable character and the background information we are given about her, really gives her character legs. I love how much of independent character she is. The relationship between Ryan and Anna, is also beautifully written and the chemistry flows off the page. 

This book gripped me from the very first page and kept me on the edge of my seat. Brilliantly written and thoroughly entertaining. LJ Ross has found the perfect balance between romance and crime fiction. Holy Island is the perfect Crime Fiction book. I was not surprised to see that this is a bestseller, because it is by far the best crime fiction I have read this year! I am so looking forward to sinking my teeth into Sycamore Gap.

The Prodigal by Nicky Black

My Review:

Set in Newcastle, The Prodigal tells the story of Detective Sergeant Lee Jamieson. Having been kicked out of his home after a fight with his father at the age of sixteen, Lee has now returned to the place where he grew up, only to find that, Valley Park, is now home to some of the worse socially deprived people in the United Kingdom. But, there is another reason, Lee has decoded to return to Valley Park, he is in search of his sixteen year old daughter, whom he has never met before. Then Lee falls for the wife of neighbourhood bad boy, Micky Kelly. As Lee and Nicola's lives get more and more entwined, Micky tightens his grip on Nicola.

I wasn't surprised to find out that this was originally written as a television script, because it would make excellent television. It is fast paced and thoroughly gripping. The Prodigal deals with issues such a drugs and domestic violence, which I think was written perfectly. It really shows the issues that can be found in any neighbourhood if you look closely enough, very well. The book is gritty and gets into the heart of Newcastle's organised crime gangs. 

The characters in The Prodigal are all very well written, but Micky is one of the best written characters I have ever read. He is a character that you will truly hate from the very beginning, but because of him, you won't be able to put this book down. He is gritty and dirty and you can really see him in your minds eye while reading the book. I loved how the character of Nicola was such a stark contrast to that of her husband. I liked Nicola's character from the very first page, but I feel that she really developed into a great character throughout the book. She is caring and admirable and you want nothing but the best for her. Lee is also a great character. He is the good guy of this story and I liked that he was trying to right the wrongs that he had made in his past, and trying to form a relationship with his daughter. 

In the past year, I've started reading crime fiction, but only very little, so I was pleasantly surprised by how much  I enjoyed The Prodigal. It isn't my usual type of book, but from now on I will be keeping an open mind when I comes to crime fiction and that is all down to this book. It grabs you from the very first page and keeps your attention throughout. It's gritty, yet entertaining, with an ending that you will not see coming. I will be recommending this book to anyone who'll listen to me.
